Pumping down a split air conditioning system involves removing the refrigerant from the system for servicing or maintenance. Here are the steps to do it:
1. Turn Off Power - Make sure the power to the indoor and outdoor units is turned off. This is crucial for safety.
2. Locate Service Valves: - Identify the service valves on both the indoor and outdoor units. These valves are typically located near the refrigerant pipes.
3. Connect Gauges: - Attach pressure gauges to the service valves. This will help monitor the pressure during the process.
4. Open Low-Side Valve - Open the low-side valve on the gauge set. This will allow the refrigerant to flow from the system.
5. Close High-Side Valve: - Close the high-side valve on the gauge set. This isolates the high-pressure side of the system.
6. Turn On Vacuum Pump: - Connect a vacuum pump to the low-side service valve and turn it on. This will create a vacuum in the system, helping to remove any remaining refrigerant and moisture.
7. Monitor Pressure - Keep an eye on the pressure gauge. Once it reaches a low enough level, close the low-side valve on the gauge set.
8. Disconnect Vacuum Pump - Turn off and disconnect the vacuum pump from the low-side service valve.
9. Recover Refrigerant - If you have a recovery machine, you can use it to safely store the recovered refrigerant. This is environmentally responsible and often required by law.
10. Close Service Valves - Close the service valves on both the indoor and outdoor units.
